Commuting to NYC

Living near Metro-North stations gives your community direct or semi-direct access to Manhattan without the cost and congestion of city living. Each town has different trade-offs in distance, transfers, convenience, and cost — but all offer compelling value.

Lifestyle upgrade: Return home to quiet streets, great schools, and room to breathe — all while keeping NYC at your fingertips.

Below are a couple of town-by-town breakdowns, sample commute times, and strategic advice.

WILTON

Nearby Stations
  • Wilton Station (Danbury Branch, New Haven Line)
  • Cannondale Station (same branch). Can also use the South Norwalk Train Station (See Norwalk)
Typical Commute Time & Pattern
  • Trains run on the Danbury Branch, connecting into the New Haven Line. Many riders transfer at South Norwalk or Stamford to continue into Manhattan.
  • A representative one-way commute on average is about 90 minutes (including transfer) from Wilton to Grand Central.
Parking / Station Features
  • Wilton station has ~200 complementary parking spaces.
  • Cannondale has ~140 parking spots.
Pros & Considerations
  • Direct access from within the town (no need to drive too far to a station).
  • Transfer required at South Norwalk Station

WESTON

Closest Stations & Access
  • Weston does not have its own Metro-North station.
  • Many commuters drive to Wilton or Cannondale (Danbury Branch) or to Westport / Norwalk stations on the New Haven Line.
Typical Commute Time
  • A door-to-door commute could run ~ 90 minutes or more, depending on which station you use and where in Weston you live.
  • For example, routing through East Norwalk (on New Haven Line) is about 1h05m in train time (excluding your drive) from that station.

RIDGEFIELD

Station Access Options
  • Branchville (Danbury Branch, New Haven Line) is within parts of southeast Ridgefield.
  • Katonah (Harlem Line, NY) is used by many Ridgefield commuters: Ridgefield-Katonah shuttle connects to Katonah station.
Typical Commute Time & Routes
  • If you use Branchville and transfer, total time to Grand Central is often ~ 100 minutes.
  • If you use the Katonah route: the shuttle plus Harlem Line train can yield a faster, more direct commute into Grand Central. (Shuttle + train combination)
  • Some route planners estimate ~ 1h42m via bus + train from Ridgefield to NYC.

NORWALK

Station Options
Norwalk has strong coverage via the New Haven Line, including:
  • South Norwalk (SoNo) Station
  • East Norwalk Station
  • Rowayton Station
  • And others (e.g. Merritt 7 for business district access)
Typical Commute Time
  • Express trains from Norwalk to Grand Central often take about ~ 60 minutes (or somewhat more, depending on express vs local) in peak times.
  • Because no major transfer is required (on the main New Haven Line) for many riders, it’s among the more convenient of your four towns.
Advantages
  • Frequent train service, including express runs.
  • Shorter “first-mile” drive or local transit to station depending on your location in Norwalk.
  • Less complexity and fewer transfers than some of the more interior towns.

Tips to Optimize Your Commute & Maximize Value

Even in a given town, some neighborhoods are much closer to a given station or shuttle route. And there is always a backup or second option not too far away!

An express or limited-stop train can shave off significant time. Monitor schedules for peak express services.

In Ridgefield especially, the success of the Katonah route depends on timely shuttle connections.

Each station has different parking options for daily/monthly passes (some have waitlists to keep in consideration).

Bike, ride-share, local shuttle, or carpool your way to the station to reduce friction.

Tools like Metro-North’s schedule system, TrainTime (or equivalent), live alerts, and town transit apps can keep you ahead of disruptions.

Comparative Snapshot & Value Proposition

Town Best Station(s) Estimated One-Way Commute Key Strengths Main Considerations
Wilton Wilton, Cannondale ~ 90 min (transfer) In-town stations, easy access Requires transfer, parking limits
Weston Drive to Wilton, Westport, or Norwalk ~ 90+ min Flexibility, quiet lifestyle No local station, longer “first mile”
Ridgefield Branchville, Katonah (shuttle) ~ 100 min or ~ 1h40+ Multiple route options Shuttle dependency, timing risks
Norwalk SoNo, East Norwalk, Rowayton ~ 60 min (express) Frequent service, direct to NYC Popular stations = crowded lots
Westport Saugatuck, Greens Farms ~ 70–75 min (express) Two stations, express availability Parking demand, permits needed
